JOB TITLE:

  • Powerhouse Technician

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the monitoring and distribution of our facilities’ energy. This includes monitoring weather, hydro grid, and pricing, maintaining our cogens, diesel generators, mechanical and absorption chillers, hot water boilers, chilled and hot water tanks, cooling towers, compressed air, gas compressors, and electrical switchgear.
  • Monitor the powerhouse remotely after hours, and although rare, be required to respond to after-hours alarms/emergencies.
  • Work with Energy Manager and advise/procure necessary spares and replacement parts.
  • Comply with the facility’s requirements and procedures for safe work and area requirements for proper PPE and work practices.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on plant equipment and recommend operational and/or maintenance changes that enhance performance, efficiency, and availability.
  • Coordinate the work activities of electrical contractors performing work in the Powerhouse.
  • Perform housekeeping functions and equipment cleaning necessary to maintain the Powerhouse in a safe, orderly condition.
  • Assist when needed in other areas of the farm with the Facilities team if required.
  • Perform duties and responsibilities assigned by the supervisor even if they are not specifically covered in this description.

EXPERIENCE and QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possess a skilled trade certificate (or) equivalent experience.
  • Previous experience in power generation operations and in-depth knowledge of electrical & control systems.
  • Knowledge of Priva Greenhouse software is considered an asset.
  • Fork-lift certification and Working from Heights ticket are considered an asset.
  • Experience with high-voltage switchgear operations.
  • Proven troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills.
  • Knowledge of predictive & preventative electrical maintenance practices.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Maintain a high degree of professionalism and effective communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and critical thinking mindset.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders.
  • Ability to work at heights and with adverse conditions.
  • Ability to enter and work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to lift 20kg of weight.
  • Must be able to accurately read and interpret instruments and gauges.
  • Ability to hear and understand audible alarms and detect changes in noise levels of rotating equipment and portable radio communication.
